¡Guaymas México!
page 2
With the addition of fellow sun-seeker Tom Panoswski , another Mexico veteran, we were ready to depart. Tom would be taking his brand-new BMW R1100RT on it's maiden voyage on this trip, Steve and James would be aboard their trusty BMW R1100 GS's, for that true sense of adventure, and I would be on my aforementioned K-bike. Fresh seafood? Hokay I"m ready! When do we leave?
DAY ONE
Due to the managerial demands put upon Steve and myself at Motorsport of Albuquerque where we are employed (how is that for a shameless plug?) we got off to a late start that Saturday afternoon. Gear loaded, tanks full and spirits high, our group of hearty sun-seekers blast off down I-25 south to our first and very important stop--lunch.
A quick bite at the Owl Cafe in quaint San Antonio, New Mexico adds another chapter in our ongoing quest for the perfect green chile cheeseburger. The Owl does offer up a fine example of this southwestern cuisine, however the quest did not (and hopefully, will not ) end. Our group are not ones to lollygag after double onion rings and kidney-buster Dr. Peppers, so we were off again to our first-night stay in Deming, New Mexico, home of the famous annual Deming Duck Races. Calm down, euro-bike fans. By duck races, I mean the feathered-fowl kind, not the Italian-Desmo kind.
No, I"m not kidding! We decided to circumvent the interstate shuffle through Las Cruces by turning off at New Mexico highway 26 In Hatch just for a change of scenery. It was along this 46-mile stretch across the desert that my electric vest decided to pack it in for the first time on this trip. Fortunately, it was unusually warm for mid-February, and the problem was easily repaired in the Best Western hotel room in Deming. We decided to turn in early, for tomorrow we cross!
DAY TWO-DEMING TO HERMOSILLO
Up early, we headed east on Interstate 10 to Arizona highway 80 toward the Douglas and Agua Prieta border crossing in Arizona, for my first misadventure of this adventure. After purchasing the Mexican insurance, the border check asked to see my paperwork. "No problem", says I, and proceed to produce everything--except the registration to the bike.
